The documentation had to be thorough as I was leading a team on this project which included myself, a graphic designer and a software developer (all working remotely). I used Google docs to document everything which was shared to all parties including the client.
The main research was initially focused on the framework that the App would use. I originally opted for an App builder and tested several, however after a considerable amount of testing, it became evident that the complexity of the App required bespoke coding. I collaborated with a software developer in order to complete the app and my focus swiftly moved onto the planning and design phases.
The process was as follows:
I presented (Figma) wireframe designs and discussed the theory behind each element. The App and Website were not completed at the same time although some planning and design work was completed concurrently.
The App designs were priority as the development stage for the app was longer than the website. Once the App designs were approved, I liaised with the software developer and managed that part of the project while I worked on the website.
The branding was completed without any previous branding styles. The logo was completed first and colours and fonts were agreed upon and we focused on the graphics/styles that would be used on both the App and Website further down the road.
UX Design: Researching the user needs was quite an easy one on this project, it also helped that there hardly any competition and therefore there was no set expectations from users. Defining and understanding the user was super important as they were most likely suffering in pain, the solution had to be easy to use and intuitive due to their potential literal pain points. The client had very specific requirements due to the need for CQC compliance this helped to gain a solid vision. The planning phases were hugely successful in this project as we had already discussed and documented in detail all the criteria thus far. Figma was used to complete the Wireframes while Lucidchart was used to complete the flow charts. User testing was extensively completed and highlighted several dev issues with the app and integration between App data and Website data as they used 2 different systems.
Web Design: The website was designed and developed using WordPress. The main complexity was to ensure a similar experience from both the App and the Website. If I was to be critical, the Website was not as intuitive as the App because we had to work within specific parameters set by the form plugin that I used. The client was able to use the WordPress CMS to process each ‘case’ with details submitted from the app and the website seamlessly integrated into one place.
App Design: The App was a pleasure to work on, I had quite the learning curve as I originally opted for an App Builder. The developer was excellent, he used React as the framework and really helped me understand what was required from a dev perspective during the design and planning phases. Testing of the Apps was particularly time consuming as both Android and iOS apps had to be tested thoroughly.
Graphic design: I collaborated with an excellent graphic designer based in South America, I had worked with her before and she made the entire process very easy indeed. I provided enough detail for her to swiftly provide designs that were almost immediately signed off by the client.
